Peter Bosz found little consolation in finishing runners-up after his side's Super Cup hopes were dashed by Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout. "A coach is never satisfied. At least, I'm not." In this case, neither with the match nor the result.

"If you're 2-1 up with two minutes remaining, then you have to win the match. But we didn't," criticised the Dutchman, before adding: "We were in the lead on three occasions if you include the penalty shootout. That's why we're disappointed."

"Borussia put in a good performance," said his opposite number Carlo Ancelotti. "It was an open game and difficult like we expected. And we know that penalty shootouts are a lottery."

DFL issue statement on video evidence

The Super Cup was full of entertainment for 90 minutes and then penalties. And let's not forget the video evidence. Many spectators watching from the stands or on TV felt that Joshua Kimmich was offside in the build-up to Bayern's first-half equaliser. The DFL issued a statement on the incident late on Saturday, saying: "Unfortunately, the calibrated lines that are normally available to and support video assistants in the event of offside decisions were not available in the first half due to technical difficulties. After studying all the camera positions available, including still images, video assistant Tobias Stieler decided that there was no instance of offside before Bayern Munich equalised at 1-1 and that there was therefore no reason for him to intervene."

Despite the glitch on its debut appearance, Peter Bosz said of the video technology: "I believe that it's a good thing if the match is as honest as possible."

"The kind of goal we like to see"

It was a match "in which we began the first period brightly and scored the kind of goal we like to see," analysed Borussia Dortmund's head coach, whose goalscorer Christian Pulisic had managed to dispossess Munich's Martinez thanks to high pressing. Bosz said: "In the period that followed I thought Bayern were better. They created the better chances. I was happy that it was only 1-1 at the break." His charges improved after the interval, though. "Then we were more compact and lost possession on fewer occasions." His conclusion: "We need to get even better. But we will do!"
