Borussia Dortmund have good memories from their previous meetings with Tottenham Hotspur, which came a year and a half ago. The Black & Yellows won both games. Here we cast a glance back.

UEFA Europa League, Round of 16 First Leg

Borussia Dortmund 3–0 Tottenham Hotspur

It was an action-packed encounter right from the off. The first half-chance fell to Tottenham's Eriksen around 20 metres from goal after 40 seconds, though it was a comfortable save for Weidenfeller. The first real opportunity came on the six-minute mark when Durm crossed from the right flank and Reus headed into the path of Castro, who blazed the ball over the bar. When Durm's shot sailed metres wide of the upright (7), Aubameyang headed narrowly over from Schmelzer's cross (11) and Mkhitaryan forced Spurs shot-stopper Lloris into a spectacular save (14, Aubameyang's follow-up was ruled out for offside), you could sense a goal for the hosts was coming.

On the half-hour mark, Schmelzer received the ball from Castro and planted a wonderful cross on Aubameyang's head for the opener. BVB were clearly in the ascendancy at this point and could have doubled their advantage early on in the second period when Aubameyang latched onto Mkhitaryan's pass and left Lloris in his wake before squaring the ball back across to Castro, who hit the post from a narrow angle (51).

A short while later substitute Subotic rose to flick on a Schmelzer cross following a short corner. The defender directed his header towards the back post, where Reus was lurking in wait to thunder it into the roof of the net and make it 2-0 (61). Nine minutes later Weigl threaded a pass through to Aubameyang, who found Castro. "Gonzo" sent an inch-perfect cross for Reus to fire home. Tottenham only really threatened on one occasion, but Weidenfeller was on hand to deny Son.

UEFA Europa League, Round of 16 Second Leg

Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

BVB delivered a very focused performance at the back despite fielding a completely untested defensive line-up. Their first chance to score came in the 14th minute when Mkhitaryan cut the ball back from the byline to Reus, who struck the side-netting from a centre-left position seven metres out. Dortmund cleverly closed down the spaces and only faced two moments of genuine danger in the opening half, with Dier heading narrowly wide from a 23rd-minute corner and Son shooting wide of the mark four minutes before the interval.

Directly after Dier's chance at the other end, Aubameyang curled a wonderful long-range effort beyond Lloris' grasp and into the net to put the Black & Yellows on the path to victory (24). Four minutes later he dispossessed Wimmer and was clean through on goal, though too much hesitation allowed the Austrian to atone for his error and deny the Gabon forward a second. In first-half stoppage time Mkhitaryan also went clean through, but his shot was deflected away for a corner.

Most of the tempo dissipated after the interval given that Borussia Dortmund boasted a 4-0 aggregate lead by this point, although there were still one or two fast-paced passages of play in the second period. Tottenham had no intention of exiting the competition on the back of a home defeat, while Dortmund looked to hit their opponents on the break and eventually doubled their lead through Aubameyang on the counter (70). Tottenham grabbed a late consolation when Subotic, who had been outstanding up until that point, underhit a backpass to Weidenfeller and Son snuck in to score. (br)
