The Fan-Meet at the ”Alten Markt“ in connection with the BVB games against Manchester United in the Champions League semi-finals was today heralded a great success. Some 6,000 BVB and Man Utd fans mingled happily as, for the first time, the event went into the evening hours with the game being shown on a giant screen. The screen had been arranged to cater for the many Manchester fans that had travelled without a ticket for the game. Highlight of the day was undoubtedly the appearance of Man Utd legend Bobby Charlton in the afternoon. Charlton urged everyone to enjoy the game in a spirit of friendship and his wishes were granted. Even UEFA’s observers were impressed. It was simply a great example of the warm welcome Dortmund provides its football fan visitors. It was especially pleasing that the event went so well because in the build-up to the game the English press had expressed horror at the prospect of an ”invitation to fight“. The Man Utd board are now urgently looking into the possibility of arranging something similar for the return leg in two weeks’ time.
