Roman Weidenfeller blamed Borussia’s poor finishing for the defeat to Bayern Munich. “We played well for 80 minutes but unfortunately didn’t take our chances.” But the Dortmund goalkeeper refused to believe that the title race is over. “We are of course seven points behind Bayern but the season is still long,” said Weidenfeller, adding that BVB’s prime focus should now be to regain second place.

Roman, what is your verdict on the game?

We played well for 80 minutes and even had chances to win the game. Unfortunately, we failed to take them.

Were BVB not clever enough or just unlucky?

We are currently lacking the cutting edge, something I’ve repeatedly said in the past weeks. Our problem is that we are not clinical enough in front of goal. We play too many square balls instead of just shooting. Then you have a problem as things happen so quickly in the Bundesliga.

BVB are now seven points behind Bayern in the Bundesliga and have the crucial Champions League game against Napoli on Tuesday. Are you in danger of losing sight of your targets for the season in the space of four days?

Nothing is decided yet, neither in the Champions League nor in the Bundesliga. But, of course, we couldn’t and can’t just take for granted to win the league title again after a year’s break. We are seven points behind Bayern, that’s true, but the season is still long. Our prime goal must be now to reclaim second place, and then we can target first spot again.

How important is the game against Napoli on Tuesday?

I think Tuesday’s game is even more important than today’s. We must beat Napoli at home, and we must take our chances as games are decided by goals.
