Jonas Hofmann started his first game for BVB this season on Saturday, but could not prevent his side’s defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach. "We lacked that final bit in the last third," said the midfielder in a post-game interview.

You started your first game today this season. What there more pressure or anticipation before the game?

There was definitively more anticipation. I know that I have the trust of the coach and the club, so I actually went quite relaxed into the game, although of course there’s always a bit of excitement and tension.

How did you experience the game?

I think we started well and I had a very good chance early on. Overall, however, we made too many little mistakes in the first half. The first two goals were a result of them, and we looked a bit out of sorts there.

What are the reasons for the defeat?

We actually went into the game well prepared as we know how important a “Borussen Derby” is for the fans. There was definitely no lack of attitude. We conceded two stupid goals and lacked that final bit in the last third. We might have had more possession, but we were unable to create enough chances.

Why is it that BVB often drop points ahead of a Champions League fixture?

I think a lot of it is down to chance. It’s really not like we save our legs or think about the next game all the time.

Did you see the incident involving Lewandowski and Ter Stegen on which basis BVB’s second goal was disallowed?

I didn’t really see it but I think the challenge took place at the edge of goal area, and it’s usually a foul when the goalkeeper is touched. Some referees might have seen it different, but today’s referee made the call. These things are always 50/50.

How will you now approach the game against St Petersburg?

We will be a bit down today, but starting tomorrow we have to fully focus on the game on Wednesday. We are looking forward to it and we should be able to quickly forget the game against Gladbach.

What’s the difference between a Champions League and a Bundesliga match?

It’s a different atmosphere. I for one get goosebumps as soon as I hear the Champions League anthem, regardless of whether I will play or be on the bench. This is special for me. All the fuzz surrounding the Champions League is spectacular, and the atmosphere is different.
