Did BVB put in a poor display? - “No,” said Sebastian Kehl after the 2-1 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach, adding: “We gave our all and fought until the end.” But why could they not find the equaliser? – “Had we scored our first goal earlier, we probably would have added a second,” said Jonas Hofmann. The post-match reactions.

Marvin Ducksch: “This is a bitter defeat. We had the first game in the back of our minds, it was similar to the one today. Gladbach created few to no chances and still went 2-0 in front.  They were inferior, especially after the dismissal, even if they defended very well. Unfortunately we couldn’t find the equaliser. Now all the focus is on the game against St Petersburg as we are thinking from game to game.”

Sebastian Kehl: “We tried everything today and fought until the end but the equaliser just wouldn’t come. We conceded silly goals, and we have to take the blame for them. Overall, however, we didn’t play badly and would have deserved a draw.”

Robert Lewandowski: “The problem was that we limited them to few chances in the first half and still were 2-0 down at halftime. We can of course play better, but I think a draw would have also been a fair result. We now need to get over this defeat quickly and start focussing on St Petersburg on Wednesday.”

Jonas Hofmann: “I think this game today was similar to the first one this season. You could see that we fought hard and tried to achieve a positive result. We tried everything in the second half, but in the end we lacked that final bit. Had we scored our first goal earlier, we probably would have added a second.”

Marcel Schmelzer: “We are very disappointed although I just heard that the coach wasn’t that unhappy with our performance. We face another tough game on Wednesday. We don’t think that we are already through to the quarter-finals. St Petersburg will be pushing us to the limit.”
