BVB launched their Facebook page in June 2010. David Görges is in charge of new media at the club, “It took almost 18 months to reach the one million mark but it all grew very quickly after that. About a year ago we had reached 2.5 million so within a year we have grown by around 6.5 million followers. That is simply fantastic and we want to say “thank you” to all our Facebook followers.” The reason for the huge leap is primarily sporting success. A great Champions League record and the Berlin Cup Final have driven the numbers through the roof, particularly on the international market.

BVB are also a big player internationally now. In terms of followers they are now ranked thirteenth ahead of Fenebahce and Spurs but just behind Paris St Germain, Galatasaray and Juventus. David Görges: “It is progress that we are naturally pleased about but it also brings with it a responsibility.” And so BVB will continue to strive to keep postings as multi-lingual as possible.
