Marco Reus will miss out on the World Cup. The most impressive Bundesliga player since Christmas suffered a ligament tear at the top of his left ankle in Friday’s win over Armenia.

“I really can’t put into words the way I am feeling right now. In a split second my dream has gone! But I have to look forward, take my rehab’ seriously and crack on! I will come back stronger than before! I wish the team all the very best so that they achieve their goal without me,” said the 25 year-old Saturday lunchtime.

Marcel Schmelzer, now Reus, so two BVB stalwarts miss out on the World Cup. Roman Weidenfeller, Erik Durm, Mats Hummels and Kevin Großkreutz are now the four BVB players travelling to Brazil. Mitch Langerak (Australia) and Sokratis (Greece) will also be flying the BVB Flag at the tournament.

BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke was so sorry to hear the news, “It is a huge blow for Marco, especially as he has been in such fine form recently. We just hope he recovers well and is ready to go again in the Black n Yellow colours next season.”

Reus will be treated with utmost care in Dortmund. The injured foot will be in plaster for a few days and then the rehab’ will start. It is as yet unclear how long the 25 year-old will be out. The German (DFB) FA medical staff seem to be suggesting a break of six to seven weeks.

Joachim Löw (speaking on the DFB Homepage) said, “It is so sad for him and for us, too. Marco was in sparkling form, both in training and in our two warm-up games. He was bubbling and was a big part of our plans for Brazil.”

Marco Reus played a part in 221 attempts on goal in the 2013-14 season, more than any other player in the league. He scored 16 goals, and so was the most lethal midfielder. It was the fourth year in a row that he notched double figures in goals and laid on another sixteen goals, too! Post Christmas he topped all the rankings going!
