“We have finally won two games in a row, and this feels really good,” said BVB sporting director Michael Zorc after the 4-2 win over Mainz on Friday, adding: “We can enjoy this win tonight.” Jürgen Klopp was also relieved. The Dortmund coach called the match a six-pointer but was swift to warn his side to bring some consistency into their game as “the next matches won’t get any easier.”

Jürgen Klopp: “The whole season remains a huge challenge for us. The first goal by Mainz was another slapstick goal even if Sato finished it off so well. But we responded very well and could have levelled almost immediately through Marco Reus and Shinji Kagawa. I told the players at halftime that would get our chances if we just kept playing our game. We didn’t defend the second goal well, but we kept hanging in. It’s a fully deserved 4-2 win as we scored great goals. It was a six-point game for us, and we won it. We are level on points with Mainz now. We need to bring some consistency into our game as the next matches won’t get any easier.”

Hans-Jürgen Watzke: “I’m totally relieved. The first half was madness. Mainz had one chance and scored, then Marco Reus and Shinji Kagawa almost immediately hit back – it was crazy! In the second half we deservedly turned this game around. Marco Reus played a sublime pass and ‘Auba’ finished it off very well. It was fantastic stuff!”

Watzke: "I'm totally relieved"

Michael Zorc: “After conceding so early in the game it was difficult for us to come back. It was important to stay calm and we immediately started to create chances. After the break we deservedly turned the game around. We have finally won two matches in a row, and this feels really good. I’m very relieved. We finally managed to turn a game around, and so we can enjoy this win tonight.”

Ilkay Gündogan: “We are very relieved and pleased. It was a fully deserved win for us. Mainz made us work hard in the first half and forced us into errors in our build-up play. But we made a great start to the second half and scored two quick goals. After Mainz’s second goal we were able to step up our game even more. We put them under a lot of pressure and played some great football.”

"We didn't play well enough in the second half"

Kasper Hjulmand (Mainz coach): “If you want to get a result in Dortmund you shouldn’t concede goals like our first and fourth. We twice didn’t defend a set play, and after Dortmund’s third goal we fell apart while BVB found a second wind. Overall, we just didn’t play well enough in the second half.”
