"It's not easy to win here," said sporting director Michael Zorc following the hard-fought victory in Mainz. Coach Lucien Favre was full of praise for the first half but critical of the second, while Thomas Delaney said: "We're not paying much attention to the table."

Michael Zorc: "Incredible! Paco Alcácer's on the field for two minutes and he scores straightaway. It was a very tough game, it was hanging in the balance. We played very well in the first period and controlled the game, but the final balls didn't arrive. Then there was a Mainz resurgence, they used their physicality to good effect against us. In the end we were perhaps fortunate to win, but it wasn't undeserved. We were widely praised after the Bayern game, then the players were with their national teams. We tried to get their senses sharp again. You could see that today too. It's not easy to win here. Mainz offer a lot of resistance, play good football and have dangerous players. That's why I'm very satisfied with the win."

Lucien Favre: "It was difficult, but not undeserved. We should've been ahead at the break. We completely dominated the game in the first period and were superior, but unfortunately didn't score. We were lacking a bit of precision and the right movement. We wanted to win here and we've managed it. We knew it wouldn't be easy away from home. Alcácer has already played two or three times from the start. But he needs time. He didn't play regularly for a long time in Spain. We're looking at the table but will continue to take it one game at a time. It's not only Bayern; other teams are playing well too: Gladbach, Frankfurt, Hoffenheim, Leipzig. All the matches are tight. We're focusing on the next match, against Bruges on Wednesday. Our aim is to have fun in training and to improve, individually and as a team."

Thomas Delaney: "We're still unbeaten, which is good. It's still early on in the season, we're not paying too much attention to the table. That's what works for us."

Stefan Bell (FSV Mainz 05): "The match was much more even than many expected it to be. It's a trait of top teams that they win games like that."
