Borussia Dortmund are mourning the loss of Atli Edvaldsson, who passed away yesterday at the age of 62 following a battle with cancer. The first Icelander to play for BVB made 30 Bundesliga appearances for the Black & Yellows in the 1980/81 season, scoring 11 goals.

A sports teacher by trade, Edvaldsson was one of the key players in a Borussia Dortmund side managed by Udo Lattek back then. Following a one-year spell with the Black & Yellows, the midfielder moved to fellow German outfits Fortuna Düsseldorf (1981-1985) and Bayer Uerdingen (1985-1988). Edvaldsson is survived by his wife and their four children.
