Just when BVB were pushing to take the lead, Leverkusen hit back and made it 2-1. But all things considered, it was not an undeserved victory for a Bayer 04 side that dominated the first period and looked dangerous on the counter-attack throughout. After 94 entertaining minutes, the shot count read 23-15 (shots on target: 13-2) to Leverkusen. Here we bring you the match facts.

On fire: Leverkusen had 23 shots on goal – no other team has managed that many against Borussia Dortmund this season. BVB themselves had 15 shots at goal and just when they looked like they might take the lead, they fell 2-1 behind.

Season record: Roman Bürki made 11 saves (eight of them in the first half), which is a new league record for a goalkeeper this season. The Swiss shot-stopper also equalled his own personal record for most saves in a Bundesliga game.

Half-time: BVB succumbed to six defeats in the first half of the campaign – the most at the halfway point of a season for six years (there were 10 under Jürgen Klopp in 2014/15).

Logical scorer: Julian Brandt was involved in 10 of BVB's 15 shots (five shots himself, five assisted). Brandt has scored 16 of his 38 Bundesliga goals at the BayArena, but this was his first goal as a visitor.

Prolific after the break: BVB have scored 28 of their 33 goals this season (and each of their last nine) in the second half. The Black & Yellows have failed to score in the first half in 12 of their 17 matches, and the Leverkusen game was their fifth first-half blank in a row.

Suspended: Thomas Delaney received his fifth yellow card of the season on his 50th Bundesliga appearance for Borussia Dortmund, meaning he will be suspended for the Gladbach trip.

Youngsters: Once he came on, Dortmund's 16-year-old forward Youssoufa Moukoko and 17-year-old Florian Wirtz – the two youngest goalscorers in Bundesliga history – were on the pitch at the same time.

Defensive midfield duo: Jude Bellingham and Thomas Delaney partnered each other in midfield for only the second time this Bundesliga season – after Matchday 6 in Bielefeld. BVB were without fellow defensive midfielders Axel Witsel (injured) and Emre Can (suspended). (br)
