The first away match of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season will take Borussia Dortmund to the Breisgau, as they play at the new Europa-Park-Stadion for the first time. On Friday evening (12 August, kick-off 20:30 CET), SC Freiburg and BVB will kick off the second round of fixtures in the Bundesliga.

Both teams were successful in their season openers last week. While Freiburg won 4-0 in Augsburg, BVB beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 at home. "Freiburg are just as aggressive as Leverkusen," said BVB coach Edin Terzic two days before the match. "Against Leverkusen, we spent a lot of time chasing the ball in the second half – it got away from us quickly. At some stage, that gets you tired, so we need to protect ourselves a little more and keep hold of the ball better."

He said Freiburg had "come along well" in recent years under Christian Streich, who has been head coach since 2012: Last season, the team reached the DFB-Pokal final and qualified for the Europa League. "They are extremely dangerous and effective in set-piece situations," said Terzic. "They are getting more and more used to playing together and are therefore more flexible. We have to be prepared to deal with that and do better to take all three points home."

Anthony Modeste could make his debut in Black and Yellow as early as this Friday. The striker, who joined from 1. FC Cologne, signed his contract in Dortmund on Monday. On Tuesday, he linked up with his new teammates for the first time on the training ground. "He looks very fit and hungry and is therefore a very good option for Friday," said Terzic. "We hope that he will continue to do the things he has done in recent years and play a similar role for us as he did in Cologne. I don't think it will be very hard for him to fit into our team."

Niklas Süle and Sebastien Haller are unavailable, but the rest of the first team are in training. Salih Özcan, who has been missing recently, completed some of the team training on Tuesday morning and trained on his own in the afternoon. Karim Adeyemi will face a fitness test on Wednesday to decide whether he can join the team again. Both are hopeful they will be available on Friday and will be able to help celebrate the second win in the second game of the season.
