The two defenders whose goals helped to secure the victory, plus the sporting director and a player who always wants to have fun on the pitch – below are the match reactions from Mats Hummels, Manuel Akanji, Michael Zorc and Julian Brandt.

Michael Zorc: "It was a good reaction from the team after the match on Tuesday. It is above all a derby victory, and the team worked well both defensively and offensively. We hardly gave away anything; the win was never in doubt. We won the ball back many times; that was very positive. Thomas Meunier was really poor in Rome. Today he responded in the right way and produced a good display both in defence and offence. I'm delighted for him."

Mats Hummels: "A derby goal was something I'd been missing. I'm very happy that it worked out. Scoring and not conceding – that's the dream day for a defender. Schalke performed well defensively today. They covered a lot of ground and were aggressive. They played a lot of one to one across the whole pitch. We moved the ball about and made only a few errors. Our counter-pressing was outstanding; that's how we tired them out. Then we delivered the decisive blow following a corner-kick. What usually happens then is that you add a second and a third goal."

Julian Brandt: "Derby wins are the best thing that you can experience in a season, especially if you win very, very comfortably. I believe football can always be fun. We have some superb lads in the squad with whom you can play some great football. I always want to win, but have fun on the pitch as well. We showed that today a lot. We had a lot of possession and were consistently present, including for the second balls. We embraced the challenges, but it wasn't easy because the opposition sat very deep. In the second half they then opened up slightly more; that's when we were able to score the goals. You can see that we're continuing to develop. We managed to defend well as a collective. That gives us courage for the coming weeks. It's important that we now keep it up, both in the Bundesliga and the Champions League."

Manuel Akanji: "That was a very good performance from us today. We were solid at the back and at the top end of the pitch we remained patient, even though we didn't manage to score a goal in the opening 45 minutes. Schalke were very aggressive and tried to assert themselves in the challenges. I never doubted that we would take home the three points. I'm happy with our performance. It's also nice to score a goal yourself and help the team in that department. I'm really delighted about that."
