Borussia Dortmund have granted Julian Weigl's wish and given the midfielder the go-ahead to make an immediate move to Benfica Lisbon.

"Julian approached us with this wish and we agreed – also because of his service to the club," said sporting director Michael Zorc: "We wish him all the best for the future!"

Weigl moved to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2015 from TSV 1860 Munich at the age of 19. He made his debut for the national team in his first Bundesliga year and was part of the Germany squad for the final stages of the 2016 European Championships. He made a total of 171 appearances for Borussia Dortmund in all competitions, scoring four goals. Weigl's contract would have expired in 18 months’ time.

"I would like to thank my teammates, BVB employees and all fans of this great club for a wonderful time and will always have Borussia Dortmund in my heart," said the 24-year-old as he bid farewell.

The transfer is subject to a successful medical.
