Just a few hours after the Borussia Dortmund U19 football side were crowned champions of Germany, the club's handball department followed suite with some success of their own: the BVB women's junior handball team were crowned winners of the German championship after defeating defending champions TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen 22-21 (10-10).

Borussia Dortmund's Leonie Kockel had the final say in a pulsating final showdown: her goal in the very-last minute ensured that the trophy went to Dortmund. The Black & Yellows had already demonstrated their mettle in the semi-final against Leipzig, which they won in extra-time. Success in the second-ever BVB appearance in the last four meant that the club achieved its first-ever appearance in the final of the competition. In front of a crowd of 1,200, Leonie Kockel stepped up to fire the Black & Yellows to success over Leverkusen and wrap up the first German Championship in the history of the club! Congratulations!
