Nuri Sahin struggled to hold back the tears as he appeared in front of the South Stand for the second time that evening after the final whistle. The Turkey international was the subject of chants and lengthy applause from the BVB faithful.

After the warm-up, Sahin was presented with a wreath and a large collage by the BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke and sporting director Michael Zorc, who both gave him a warm embrace. The whole stadium rose to their feet to honour a player who made 274 appearances for Borussia Dortmund and represented the club for a total of 20,144 minutes.

After the match, he told werder.de: "What I really liked from the coach was that we played our game here in Dortmund and didn't park the bus. There are nicer things than seeing players like Marco Reus or Jadon Sancho coming towards you at speed. We held our own and played a decent game, defending well for long periods. With a bit of luck we would've taken home a point and I don't think anyone would've been wondering how." (jl)
