Sven Bender will remain at Borussia Dortmund in the future. The eight time German champion who has made seven international appearances has agreed a contract extension until 30. June 2021. Bender, who plays both in midfield and in the back four, has worn the BVB shirt since 2009.

“I want to thank Hans-Joachim Watzke, Michael Zorc and Thomas Tuchel for having faith in me. We have reached the end of some really good discussions. I am extremely happy to be allowed to continue wearing the black and yellow jersey in the future. It would make me happy if a couple of my teammates would follow suit in the coming weeks”, said Sven Bender.

Originally from Bavaria, Bender was part of the BVB team that became champions in 2011 and 2012 and won the DFB-Pokal in 2012. In the 144 Bundesliga games he has played for BVB he has only received eleven yellow cards. Nuri Sahin said the following about his tactics which are useful for the team: “He goes for balls with his head in a way that I never could with my feet."

“Sven Bender possesses an unquestionable sporting talent and is an extremely important unifying figure. I am personally very pleased that such a strong character player has chosen a long term future at BVB”, said Hans-Joachim Watzke, Borussia Dortmund’s CEO. Sporting director Michael Zorc added: “Sven plays with intransigency and exemplary fairness. For many years he has been a valuable asset to our team, as a player and a man!”
