It was a successful weekend of tournaments and friendly games for our academy Bundesliga sides: the U19s triumphed 3-1 over VfB Stuttgart in the final of the hotly-contested Bundesliga Cup, while the U17s won 4-0 against SV Wehen Wiesbaden in their opening friendly game of preseason.

Despite the eventual triumph, the tournament in Schwäbisch Hall got off to a poor start. In their opening game of the competition against TSG Hoffenheim 1899, BVB were the superior side, but nonetheless finished the match 2-1 down on the scoreboard. However, Mike Tullberg's side managed to turn things around on day two: the Black & Yellows ran out 4-2 winners over their eventual final opponents VfB Stuttgart and then reached another gear to sweep aside Hertha BSC by a score of 3-0. BVB made it through the semi-finals after beating Schalke 04 on penalties.

''The boys gave it their all everything into it and managed to get the rewards their hard work in training have deserved,'' said head coach Mike Tullberg after an all-round impressive performance from the U19s. All of the players who made the trip to Schwäbisch Hall made an appearance during the tournament.

The newly-assembled U17s also gave a good showing in their 4-0 win over Wehen Wiesbaden. ''That was really strong for an opening game,'' said coach Sebastian Geppert. The goals were scored by loan player Cole Campbell, Rafael Lubach and Vincenzo Onofrietti. There was also an own goal. (wiwi)
