Borussia Dortmund have previously played 240 matches in European competition, facing teams from 27 different countries. That figure will rise to 28 on Tuesday, when they take on Cypriot outfit Apoel Nicosia.

Peter Bosz will be hoping to use the trip to the GSP Stadium to bring two negative runs to an end and help the club reach a European landmark. The Black & Yellows have only won one of their last seven games – against Benfica – in Europe's elite club competition, while they have not won on the road for a year – a 2-1 victory over Sporting – and lost the three games that followed their 2-2 draw at Real Madrid. Success in Nicosia would end both of these unwanted runs while simultaneously earning the club a 50th victory in the UEFA Champions League.

With 26 titles and 21 domestic cups, Apoel are Cyprus' record champions in both competitions and are the only club from the island nation to have reached both the group and knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. They have an overwhelmingly negative record against German opposition, however, with one victory (against BFC Dynamo Berlin in 1980), one draw (against FC Schalke 04 in 2008) and 14 defeats from 16 previous matches.

Much like BVB, Apoel Nicosia have kicked off their European campaign with two defeats, losing by a 3-0 scoreline to both Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur. However, the defeat by the Premier League Club and their 1-0 loss to RSC Anderlecht in the last 16 of last season's UEFA Europa League are the only home defeats that Apoel have suffered in their last 12 home games at European level. Nine of those 12 home games ended in victory and – the two aforementioned defeats aside – Apoel have not conceded a single goal in their last eight home European games.
