Having taken charge only two days earlier, Peter Stöger made an immediate impact as he guided BVB to a clean sheet and ended an eight-match winless run during which the Black & Yellows had shipped 21 goals.

Winless run over: Borussia Dortmund recorded their first Bundesliga victory since the end of September to put an end to an eight-match winless run – during which they had picked up only three points.

Superior second period: Borussia won only 40 percent of the challenges in the first half, but that figure rose to 61 percent after the interval. After half an hour, Mainz had created six chances to Dortmund's one. But in the final hour of the match, the visitors had way more opportunities (14-7).

Fair play: BVB committed only six fouls (Mainz: 14), and there was only one booking.

Successful start: Peter Stöger followed in the footsteps of predecessors Jürgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Peter Bosz by kicking off his BVB tenure with a win.

Favourite foe: Borussia Dortmund have won 12 of their last 15 matches against Mainz 05, taking 38 out of a possible 45 points. On average, they have conceded fewer than a goal per game against the Zerofivers (19 in 23). That's fewer goals than against any other current Bundesliga side.

Passing machine: Julian Weigl played only one misplaced pass, with 61 of his 62 passes reaching a team-mate.

Danger man versus Mainz: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been involved in 10 goals in his nine matches against the Zerofivers (four goals, six assists).

Back of the net: Sokratis scored his second goal of the season; the first came against Peter Stöger while he was still in charge of Cologne earlier this term.
