Borussia Dortmund suffered their second defeat of the Bundesliga season on Matchday 11 as they deservedly lost 4-0 (1-0) away to FC Bayern Munich in the game of the round.

Boris Rupert reporting from Munich

BVB did not at any stage reach the heights of their midweek 3-2 victory over Inter Milan and were condemned to another heavy defeat in Munich courtesy of goals from Lewandowski (two), Gnabry and Hummels (own goal).

The scenario:
Since winning 3-0 at the Allianz Arena in April 2014, the Black & Yellows had not picked up a single point on their subsequent five trips to Munich in the Bundesliga. Speaking in the run-up to the match, Michael Zorc labelled it a "horrendous record" that needed to be remedied. Dortmund went into the game having won at home in the cup, league and Champions League in the space of a week, while Bayern had won twice and lost once in their last three matches in all competitions. They had, however, taken only four points from their last four league games.

Personnel matters:
Both teams started with exactly the same line-ups they had fielded in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Sancho was deemed fit enough to start for BVB, while Reus was named in the squad but started on the bench.

Tactics:
Bayern took to the field in a 4-3-3 formation with Kimmich in the defensive midfield role and Martinez alongside Alaba at the heart of a makeshift back four. Dortmund played in their usual 4-2-3-1 system. Midfielders Witsel and Weigl clearly stuck to Goretzka and Müller respectively to begin with but that went out of the window after 10 minutes. Hazard and Sancho at times teamed up to overload the right flank, while Brandt and Götze operated centrally.

The match & analysis:
The two teams cancelled each other out in the opening stages and there were no notable opportunities in the final third for either side until Bayern opened the scoring in the 17th minute. The danger initially looked to have been averted but the ball fell to Pavard on the right of the box and the Frenchman reacted instantaneously by volleying the ball across the face of goal towards Lewandowski, who headed home the opener from a totally unmarked position.

The Black & Yellows showed little in the way of aggression and bravery, failing to get sufficiently tight to their opponents and close down the passing channels. The pressing was not vigorous enough to force mistakes from a home side whose predominant focus was to ensure stability in defence. Though they were dangerous going forward too and nearly doubled their advantage from a double chance in the 27th minute of the match: Hakimi could not stop Lewandowski from teeing up Coman, whose attempt was cleared off the line by Schulz before Bürki kept out Gnabry's strike a matter of seconds later.

BVB's build-up play suffered from a lack of movement, with all the passing options marked. Sancho's evening was already over by the 35-minute mark despite no obvious signs of injury. He was substituted and replaced by Guerreiro.

The Black & Yellows might have been hoping to make amends for their first-half display after the interval but they were caught totally off guard within seconds of the restart. Martinez played a long ball downfield towards Müller on the left flank and he squared it towards Lewandowski. The ball ran through to Gnabry, who fired home from close range 71 seconds into the second half. The linesman's flag went up, but the VAR reviewed the goal and allowed it to stand.

Lewandowski came close to adding a third on the hour mark but fired inches wide. A double substitution followed shortly afterwards as Götze and Weigl made way for Alcácer and Reus, with BVB shifting to a 4-1-4-1 formation in which Reus and Brandt were behind Alcácer with Guerreiro and Hazard on the flanks. But their attacking efforts continued to lack precision, with the final balls not good enough. The first moment of danger came in the 70th minute when Alcácer failed to convert Hakimi's cross.

Instead, it was Bayern who scored the next goal with 15 minutes to go when Lewandowski played a one-two with Müller before firing home from close range in the box. Three minutes later, it was 4-0 after Hummels turned the ball into his own net. It was another example of an attack that had not been defended properly in the build-up.
