The teams that finish first and second in each group qualify for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. BVB are currently sat in third place in Group F, level on points with Inter Milan. Unfortunately for BVB, the system used to separate two teams with the same points total is the head-to-head match-up. Despite winning 3-2 at home, BVB are edged out by the Italians on goal difference due to the 2-0 defeat in the San Siro.

Barcelona's status as group winners is secure. Borussia's task against Slavia on Tuesday is simple: pick up more points that Inter do in their match at home to the Spanish giants. Should Barca win in the San Siro, then all the Black & Yellows will have to do is draw at home to the Czech champions. If the match in Milan ends in a draw, BVB will have to win in order to progress to the next round. If Inter come out on top against the Catalans, BVB will be eliminated from Europe's elite club competition. However, the club's fans would still have European matches to look forward to in the new year given that a third place finish results in a place in the Round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League.

The draw for both the Round of 16 of the Champions League as well as the Round of 32 of the Europa League will take place next Monday (16 December). (br)
