There has not been a draw between Borussia Dortmund and 1. FSV Mainz 05 at Signal Iduna Park since 2011. Here are the facts on Saturday afternoon's match.

The scenario: Fourth versus bottom. BVB have stabilised. While the record in the five matches before the change of coach was one win, two draws and two defeats, there have since been four victories and one defeat. Borussia Dortmund were the only club in the Bundesliga's top six to win in the last round of fixtures, whereas Mainz 05 dropped into 18th place following their third successive defeat. With 15 rounds of matches played, the men from Rhenish Hesse have only six points on the board and have already lost 11 games – both negative records for the club in the Bundesliga.

Home/away: Having suffered three home defeats in succession, Borussia beat VfL Wolfsburg 2-0 a fortnight ago to claim their first win on home soil since the end of October 2020. The home record of four wins and three defeats is only just about positive and leaves BVB in seventh place in the home table. Mainz have won only once on the road this season (a 3-1 triumph in Freiburg on 22 November 2020) and sit second-bottom in the away table with only four points (W1 D1 L5) and a goal difference of 8-18.

Head-to-head record: The Black & Yellows have lost two of their past three home games against the Red & Whites, having previously been unbeaten in the first 11 meetings on home soil (seven wins and four draws). The spoils were shared in four of the first five home games against the Zero-Fivers, while the last nine meetings have always produced a winner (Dortmund on seven occasions). The Black & Yellows have conceded fewer than a goal per game on average against Mainz (25 in 28 games). They have never lost after scoring the first goal of the game (W13 D5).

Statistics: Borussia have won three of their last four Bundesliga matches. Only Bayern Munich have more wins (10) than BVB (9). The Black & Yellows have scored at least one goal in each of their previous 13 league games. No other team has suffered more defeats than Mainz (11), who have only found the opposition net in one of their last five Bundesliga matches. On that occasion, however, they did so twice – in a 5-2 defeat away to FC Bayern Munich on 3 January.

Biggest win: There was a 3-0 victory in February 2005 courtesy of goals from Ebi Smolarek, Jan Koller and Lars Ricken. Overall, the Black & Yellows had 31 shots that day – the most of any Bundesliga club in the 2004/2005 season.
