Stefan Reuter wore the Borussia Dortmund shirt 85 times in a European cup competition. As of today, the 1997 Champions League winner and UEFA Cup finalist from 1993 and 2002 must share his leading position in this category with two other players.

Level terms: Mats Hummels (35) and Marco Reus (34) made their 85th appearances for BVB in a European cup competition in Eindhoven and drew level with record appearance-maker Stefan Reuter. Hummels made his first appearance in a 2-0 defeat against Udinese on 18 September 2008. His personal tally includes a further 24 appearances in a Bayern Munich shirt. Reus made his debut in a 1-0 victory against Ajax in September 2012 and has made each of his 85 international club appearances in a Black & Yellow shirt, scoring 32 goals in the process.

Head-to-head: The match in Eindhoven was Borussia Dortmund's seventh away game against an Eredivisie club – that includes the 2002 UEFA Cup final away to Feyenoord (3-2 defeat). Dortmund's two victories in the Netherlands now stand in contrast to two draws and three defeats.

Good omen: After an away draw in the first leg of a European cup competition, Borussia Dortmund have gone through in eight out of nine cases!

Match data: Eindhoven registered 15 shots at goal – almost twice as many as BVB. But: five of Dortmund's eight attempts were on target, which is one more than PSV managed. Eindhoven had 54% possession.

Fully present: Alexander Meyer was drafted in at late notice for his sixth UEFA Champions League appearance (personal record: two wins, two draws and two defeats). He was only beaten from the penalty spot and saved three of the four shots at his goal.

Debut: Kjell Wätjen from Borussia Dortmund U19s was in the first-team squad for the first time. The attacking midfielder, who is in the younger year group, has so far scored six goals in 15 A-Junior Bundesliga games. Wätjen only turned 18 four days ago.

Back in action: Julian Duranville, 17, played his first and to date only game for the first team in the title-decider against Mainz 05 (2-2 draw) on 27 May 2023.  In Eindhoven, he was back in the squad for the first time after a long injury layoff. (br)
