Michael Zorc extends contract until 2021

“The past one and a half years have been notoriously difficult for multiple reasons, despite the DFB Cup triumph and qualification for the UEFA Champions League. With this in mind, I believe all the more that it is our joint responsibility to steer Borussia Dortmund into calmer waters, to make the team sustainable at a high level and to transform the club into an integral fixture in the UEFA Champions League,” said Zorc.

Zorc embodies Borussia Dortmund like almost no other. In a BVB career that started at A-Youth level and culminated in a world title, the record appearance-maker plied his trade for the Westphalian club for over 20 years. He has since been managing the Black & Yellows’ sporting fortunes for a further two decades.

As a player, the Dortmund native made 463 Bundesliga appearances (131 goals), 66 European appearances (13 goals) and 28 DFB Cup appearances (10 goals) for BVB. He has made more BVB appearances than any other player, while only Manfred Burgsmüller has netted more Bundesliga goals in Black & Yellow.

Following the end of his playing career, which culminated in Bundesliga titles in 1995 and 1996, the 1997 Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup later that year, Zorc made the switch to management. He has overseen three Bundesliga titles, two DFB Cup wins and two European finals (2002 UEFA Cup and the 2013 UEFA Champions League) during his time in the role.

The 55-year-old is responsible for all footballing matters at Borussia Dortmund, right down to the youth teams.
