The third cup tie of the current season will feature the third goalkeeper. Since both Roman Bürki and Marwin Hitz are out ill, Eric Oelschlägel will play in goal for Borussia Dortmund this evening in the cup match against Werder Bremen.

The 23-year-old will make his professional debut after 67 third division appearances for Werder Bremen II as well as 17 Regionalliga appearances for Borussia Dortmund's U23s. He goes up against, of all people, his former club from the Weser, for whose A-Youth and U23 sides he played in goal from 2012 to 2018.

Besides Bürki and Hitz, Jadon Sancho and Marcel Schmelzer will also be unavailable due to sickness. Manuel Akanji is also absent, as is Lukasz Piszczek, who has been nursing a foot injury since the match against Hanover. Dan-Axel Zagadou is back in the squad for the first time since 1 December, while Luca Unbehaun is on the bench as reserve goalkeeper.

Eric Oelschlägel started out in Dynamo Dresden's youth system in 2001 before moving to the Weser in 2012. Oelschlägel signed his first professional contract in January 2016. Furthermore, the 1.93 metre tall goalkeeper born in Hoyerswerda in 1995 has what most footballers don't: an Olympic medal in his display cabinet. In his case the colour is silver, won in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Horst Hrubesch took him with him for the games in Brazil as third goalkeeper. It is exactly this role that Öelschlägel is also playing for Borussia Dortmund's senior squad this season, alongside his job as number one in the Regionalliga West.
