This Saturday (15:30 CET), Signal Iduna Park will be rocking when Schalke 04 come to town to contest the highly-anticipated Ruhr derby. The 153 previous meetings between the two sides have witnessed a total of 526 goals. It's Borussia who lead the overall head-to-head match-up in the Bundesliga, with 33 wins compared to 31 for Schalke. These are just a few of the fascinating facts that the writing team at the club magazine Borussia have put together in anticipation of Saturday's showdown.

How many derbies have taken place so far?

The first-ever clash between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 took place in Herne on 3 May, 1925, with the two teams going head-to-head to determine the champion of the local Ruhr league. It was Schalke who emerged victorious, running out 4-2 winners on the day. According to some sources, the two teams have since contested a total of 176 matches, but the clubs themselves place the official number at 153. 93 of these have taken place in the Bundesliga, with Dortmund slightly ahead in the all-time head-to-head ranking: BVB have 33 Bundesliga wins in the derby, while Schalke have 31.

Although Schalke came out on top in the first-ever match, it was a player in black & yellow who scored the first-ever Ruhr derby goal: Will Fischer found the back of the net with just 04 minutes on the clock to make the score 1-0 to 09.

Who has scored the most goals in the derby?

In Bundesliga encounters between the two clubs, Lothar Emmerich is way out in front with ten goals scored. He's also the only player to ever net a hat-trick in a derby (on 12 November 1966). If goals scored before the foundation of the Bundesliga in 1962 are also taken into account, then Emmerich has 11 goals in total - somewhat short of the 16 scored by Schalke legend Ernst Kuzorra.

Who has made the most derby appearances?

Roman Weidenfeller: between his first derby on 22 February 2003 (his second-ever Bundesliga appearance for BVB) and his last on 25 November 2017 (his penultimate match for the club), the BVB legend kept goal in a total of 24 derbies. This places him at the top of the all-time appearances list alongside Schalke's Klaus Fichtel, who also played in the fixture 24 times.

What have been the highest-scoring derbies?

Ten goals have been scored on two occasions - on 12 March 1939, when Schalke ran out 7-3 winners and on 20 October 1940, when the Royal Blues demolished BVB 10-0 for the biggest win in Ruhr derby history. The most high-scoring matches in the Bundesliga came back in 1962 and 1964, with BVB enjoying 6-2 successes on two separate occasions, as well as in 2017, when the two sides played out a 4-4 draw.

Which player has won the most derbies?

Michael Zorc: between 18 September 1982 (a 2-0 win) and 3 May 1997 (a 1-0 win in which he scored the only goal of the game), the club's current sporting director was on the winning side on ten separate occasions.

Who has played for both clubs?

A total of 28 players have worn both the black & yellow of Dortmund and the royal blue of Schalke during their career. Perhaps the most well-known cases are Steffen Freund, Jens Lehmann, Christoph Metzelder, Andreas Möller and Rolf Rüssmann. Five players have joined the arch-rivals and then moved back in the other direction: Schalke legends Reinhard ''Stan'' Libuda and Rüdiger Abramczik, as well as BVB icons Heinrich Kwiatkowski (a World Cup winner with West Germany in 1954), Herbert Sandmann (German champion with BVB in 1956 and 1957) as well as Jürgen Wegmann (scorer of the goal which saved the club from relegation in 1986). Three coaches (Udo Lattek, Horst Franz und Uli Maslo) have roamed the touchline for both clubs.
