The last round of qualifiers for the 2020 European Championship saw Manuel Akanji and Thomas Delaney help their respective countries reach the tournament next summer. Akanji's Switzerland eased their way to a comfortable 6-1 away victory over Gibraltar, while Delaney's Denmark held off a late fightback to draw 1-1 against the Republic of Ireland at an atmospheric Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Manuel Akanji featured in the starting XI and played the first 65 minutes as Switzerland comfortably dispatched minnows Gibraltar 6-1 away from home in their final qualifier. The three points picked up on the Iberian Peninsula were enough to see Vladimir Petkovic's side qualify for the tournament as group winners.

The Danes would certainly have liked to finish above them in Group D, but there was still a celebratory atmosphere among the Red & White contingent in Dublin on Monday evening as a 1-1 draw against Ireland secured the Scandinavian nation a spot in the finals. From a Borussia Dortmund perspective, however, the result was overshadowed by an injury suffered by Thomas Delaney. The defensive midfielder was involved in a collision in the opening stages and had to be substituted off after 13 minutes. A precise diagnosis has yet to be made.

Elsewhere, Paco Alcácer, whose homeland Spain had already booked their place at the tournament in the October international break, came on as a substitute in the 67th minute of Monday night's 5-0 victory over Romania in Madrid.

That means that depending on the final squad lists, there could be up to 10 Black & Yellows involved in the 2020 European Championship: Akanji (Switzerland), Delaney (Denmark), Alcácer (Spain), Hazard, Witsel (both Belgium), Brandt, Schulz, Reus (all Germany), Sancho (England), Guerreiro (Portugal).
