BVB’s Masters team were rated favourites for the title after opening day wins against Schalke (3-1, goals by Owomoyela, da Silva, Federico) and Dinamo Tiblisi (3-2, Federico (2), Gambino) in the traditional indoor Masters in Berlin’s Max-Schmeling-Halle. In the end though, BVB could only finish in fourth place.

After losing 2-7 to Leverkusen (goals by Driller and da Silva) and a 0-3 semi-final defeat against Hertha BSC, BVB ended up in a penalty shootout for third spot on the final day of the tournament. Driller and da Silva each scored twice but Werder Bremen prevailed 5-4 on penalties as BVB finished in fourth place. Günter Kutowski’s side was weakened by the early departure of David Odonkor, who had to leave on the second day, while Patrick Owomoyela suffered a muscle injury against Tbilisi.
