Following the game against Lazio in Rome, Lucien Favre, Sebastian Kehl and Marco Reus all spoke very critically about the team's performance. Here are the match reactions.

Lucien Favre (head coach): "I didn't see a lot of good things today. Yet we still had four or five chances; we need to be more patient on that front. We conceded a goal after only six minutes following an unnecessary loss of possession. That was a gift. Then we needed to stay calm, but we conceded a second goal from a corner. We managed to pull it back to 2-1 but that goal only came in the second half. We weren't prepared to defend together today. We did that well in Hoffenheim but we didn't do it here today. We'll manage the next few games but we need to improve. I'm very disappointed."

Sebastian Kehl (head of the licensed player division): "We absolutely deserved to lose. We cannot perform like that in the Champions League. There were far too many misplaced passes – and a few absences too, you have to say. There are few players who went close to their performance limits in the first half. Our commitment was completely lacking; we didn't get stuck into the challenges, were far too passive. You cannot perform like that. If we go about it like that, we won't get anywhere. If we perform like that, we'll find it very difficult to get through to the next round. We had a good game in Hoffenheim; the same cannot be said of the performance today. We did actually have the freshness we needed today, but it was simply dismal. We have the derby at the weekend, that's a completely different kind of battle that awaits us. We'll have to perform very, very differently in that."

Marco Reus (captain): "We were completely asleep in the opening minutes, the opening half. That's inexplicable for me. We then had two or three good shooting opportunities in the second half, but we simply didn't attack with enough purpose and were not compact. That's obviously not how you want to perform in your first Champions League game. It's simply poor and it's obviously not what we aim for. We had few players in the final third where we could pose a threat to their goal. Our passing game wasn't good, nor was our pressing. In fact, we were completely devoid of everything. I didn't have a good performance – as was the case for the entire team. We'll have to put up with any criticism that comes our way. We didn't play together as a team well and deserved to lose."
