''Gast-Haus'' delighted to receive BVB blankets
The Dortmund-based charitable association for the homeless "Gast-Haus statt Bank" has been looking after and supporting homeless men and women in Dortmund since 1995. This winter, volunteers are faced with major challenges due to the massive social disruption caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the many problems currently caused by the Coronavirus, the "Gast-Haus" is still one of the most important contact points for homeless people in Dortmund. The reason for this is that the Homeless Initiative is committed to its clientele on a large scale. Homeless people in Dortmund can turn to the staff with a wide range of concerns and count on various forms of assistance. In addition to social contact, personal talks and counselling, the volunteers also offer free meals and regular medical consultations for visitors. Another important aspect of the institute's work is the fact that visitors can attend to their personal hygiene as well as access items of clothing. Members of staff are currently facing great challenges to attend to the needs of the homeless while also respecting hygiene and social distancing regulations.
The BVB Foundation "leuchte auf" has repeatedly supported the important work undertaken by the homeless shelter initiative through financial contributions. Given that there is increased demand for warm fabrics, especially at the beginning of winter, BVB Merchandising is supporting "Gast-Haus" with a donation of 700 BVB woollen blankets. It is hoped that these will help keep people warm during the cold days and nights to come. Sandra Fuhge from "Gast-Haus" was delighted to receive the blankets alongside some of the homeless people supported by the shelter. The blankets are now being passed on to those who need them.
