Borussia Dortmund takes part in "Remembrance Day" every year. Unfortunately, the current situation means that this year's event cannot take place. But there will still be several memorial events taking place to commemorate the liberation of Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp on 27 January 1945.

The annual event that is held by Borussia Dortmund on "Remembrance Day" unfortunately cannot take place in 2021. "For a decade, BV. Borussia 09 e. V. Dortmund has marked 'Remembrance Day' on 27 January with an event to commemorate the liberation of Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event must be cancelled this year," explained treasurer Dr. Reinhold Lunow. "I'm confident that we'll be able to commemorate the victims of the Nazi regime again on 27 January 2022 with an event at the refurbished BORUSSEUM."

Instead, Borussia Dortmund will lay down a wreath at the former train station Dortmund-Süd in memory of the Jews who were deported from Dortmund. The train station was the location where four of the five deportations from Dortmund took place; more than 1,000 of the city's inhabitants were deported from there.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum will hold a digital memorial service at 76.auschwitz.org at 16:00 CET on 27 January 2021. This year, the official memorial event will focus on the fate of children at former German concentration and extermination camps. There were 700 children among the 7,000 prisoners freed when the soldiers of the Red Army liberated the Auschwitz camp complex on 27 January 1945.

Borussia Dortmund has already taken part in the annual "Day of Remembrance in German Football" on Friday. Prior to BVB's match against Borussia Mönchengladbach, team captains Marco Reus and Lars Stindl joined the team of referees in holding up a banner that read "#WeRemember" in memory of the six million victims of the Holocaust.
