Germany beat reigning champions Portugal 4-2 on Saturday evening in their second group game at the European Championships. Mats Hummels and Emre Can were in action for the German team, while Raphael Guerreiro played the full 90 minutes for the Portuguese side. The DFB team now have their chances of reaching the EURO knockout stages firmly in their own hands heading into the final match.

It was Germany's third successive European Championship victory over Portugal – after wins in 2008 and 2012. Prior to the game this evening, Portugal were unbeaten in seven games.

The ball was already in the back of the net by the fifth minute, though Robin Gosens' artistic goal was ruled out due to Serge Gnabry being in an offside position. Overall, it was a positive and attacking start from the German team in front of 13,000 spectators in Munich.

Ronaldo opens scoring, Germany turn game

Germany head coach Joachim Löw stuck with the starting XI from the France match for the second game in Group F. BVB defender Mats Hummels started once again and lined up in the middle of the back three in a 3-4-3 formation.

Following a counter-attack, EURO record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo took full advantage of his first sniff of goal to score his 12th goal at European Championships finals and put Portugal in the lead with 15 minutes played.

Germany coach Joachim Löw and his players got their reward for their courageous start in the 35th minute, however. Again it was Gosens, who went for goal from a centre-left position. Kai Havertz was lurking in a central position and he pressured his opponent Ruben Dias into ultimately turning the ball into his own net. Only four minutes later, the Germany team forced their opposition into another own goal. This time it was BVB man Guerreiro, whose attempted intervention flew past his own goalkeeper and into the net.

Black & Yellows in action: Can replaces Hummels

The German team continued in self-confident fashion after the interval and demonstrated plenty of offensive power. In the 51st minute Havertz made it 3-1 courtesy of an assist from Gosens, who then headed home in the 60th minute of the match to make it 4-1! Then came an all-Borussia substitution with half an hour to go, as Emre Can came on for Hummels. Diogo Jota later reduced the deficit to 4-2.

On Saturday afternoon, the Hungarian national team battled their way to a 1-1 draw with France. This coming Wednesday (23 June), Hummels, Can & Co. will play their final group game against Hungary (kick-off at 21:00 CET) and are in with a promising chance of qualifying for the last 16.
