Head coach Marco Rose and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel fielded questions in front of the TV cameras following the final whistle in Hamburg. The match reactions.

Marco Rose: "We didn't start this cup evening the way you should start a cup evening. We caused ourselves several problems in the opening 15 minutes and also conceded a goal straightaway. That's when it gets difficult. The way we went about trying to score the equaliser in the first half was a little rash. After going 2-0 down, we adjusted a few things. But the key issue is how we, as the holders, started this cup battle away at St. Pauli. We didn't get that right."

Gregor Kobel: "It was clear to us that it was definitely going to be a difficult game here. We lost possession many times in the opening 20, 30 minutes. St. Pauli got in front of our goal relatively easily on two occasions. When you're 2-0 down away on a difficult playing surface, then it's going to be tough. But we didn't manage in the remaining time to level the game up. We did have chances, but they were not enough. We had difficulties moving the ball about properly. Pauli defended well. It was difficult to get in behind the lines."
