Sevilla took a 66th-minute lead through Iker Ortin in a match that was disjointed and hectic for long spells and contained many interruptions. Substitute Paris Brunner restored parity a short while later but there was bad news for left-back Prince Aning, who sustained an ankle injury and had to be substituted.

Mike Tullberg made several changes to the team. Lion Semic occupied the right-back berth, with Prince Aning over on the left. Abdoulaye Kamara and U23 player Göktan Gürpüz lined up in the middle of the park alongside Vasco Walz and Farouk Cisse, while Julian Rijkhoff was supported in attack by Samuel Bamba up until the latter was substituted. Paris Brunner joined Noa-Gabriel Simic on the bench to begin with.

BVB, who had never played in this formation before, struggled to pick up rhythm and find their way into the game. The summer temperatures (32 degrees) also posed the team problems at the Estadio Jesús Navas. For long spells, the Black & Yellows' performance was characterised by misunderstandings and misplaced passes. Sevilla shot-stopper Castillo was only called into action for the first time in the 26th minute following a cross from Prince Aning. He also comfortably dealt with the second test shortly before the interval from Samuel Bamba, who had turned on the afterburners down the right flank.

His opposite number Marian Kirsch had a considerably busier day at the office. With only three minutes on the clock, he was in the thick of the action following a shot from Vazquez from 18 metres. But Kirsch's biggest intervention came in the 34th minute when Fernandez got a shot away from eight metres. The alert Filippo Mane blocked Bueno's follow-up.

Paris Brunner scores first Youth League goal

BVB looked slightly livelier and more aggressive in the second half, Mike Tullberg having brought on three pairs of fresh legs – Noa-Gabriel Simic, Paris Brunner and Vincenzo Onofrietti – in attack. That appeared to give their play more structure. But it was Sevilla who broke the deadlock through the totally unmarked Iker Ortin, who headed home a Bueno corner to make it 1-0. Borussia showed the right reaction, though, with Simic going on a lovely solo run and teeing up U17 forward Paris Brunner to score his first UEFA Youth League goal (71). Vincenzo Onofrietti had a chance to win the match in the 90th minute when he was fed by Kamara but could not beat Castillo.

BVB are next in action in the Bundesliga on Saturday, when they will travel away to SC Paderborn. The return fixture against Sevilla will take place at the Brackel Youth Performance Centre at 16:00 CET on Tuesday 11 October.
