Borussia Dortmund have signed Matthias Ginter (20) from SC Freiburg. The defender, who was part of Germany’s World Cup winning squad, has joined BVB on a five-year contract running until 30 June 2019 following a medical on Wednesday. He will wear the number 28 shirt for the eight-time German champions.

Last season, Germany international Ginter (70 Bundesliga games/2 goals) started in all games for SC Freiburg and was substituted just once while picking up only one yellow card. The 20-year-old boasted an impressive 84 percent passing accuracy last year and gained experience in the UEFA Europa League (6 games/ 1 goal). In 2012 and 2013, Ginter won the prestigious Fritz Walter medal awarded by the German Football Association (DFB) for the best German player in his age group.

“Matthias is a technically good and versatile top German talent who has always enjoyed a high degree of interest from us. We are pleased and also a bit proud that he expressed his desire to join Borussia Dortmund so soon and so emphatically. BVB are competing in three competitions next season, have set themselves very ambitious goals and deliberately decided to enter the new season with four strong centre backs," said Michael Zorc, Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director.

“My childhood dream is coming true today. I have always been a great Dortmund fan and now I can wear the shirt of my favourite club. I want to take the next step in my sporting development in Dortmund and I am already looking forward to the amazing atmosphere at Signal Iduna Park, and after my holidays be a part of this wonderful team that I've only seen and heard positive things about,” said Ginter.

In Dortmund, Matthias Ginter will team up with his World Cup winning colleagues Mats Hummels, Roman Weidenfeller, Erik Durm and Kevin Grosskreutz. He will join the team during BVB’s training camp in Bad Ragaz (Switzerland) at the beginning of August.

SC Freiburg und Borussia Dortmund agreed not to disclose the details of the transfer.
