There have been four previous meetings between Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin – four in the league and two in the cup. The home side has won every time. Here are the facts ahead of the game against the Köpenick club.

The scenario: Two of the teams involved in European competition will go head-to-head to round off this "English week". BVB go into the match in third position with nine points, while Union have made their best-ever start and sit in eighth place with six points.

Home/away: Borussia Dortmund have emerged as winners in each of their last six Bundesliga home games, and have scored at least one goal in every one of their 19 games on home turf since the start of the 2020/21 season. Union are winless in seven games on the road starting last season – a new club negative record. Their last away victory to date came on 20 February when they beat Freiburg 1-0.

Head-to-head record: The two clubs are meeting in a competitive encounter for the seventh time. BVB have won both cup clashes at home, though they were decided in extra-time (2018/19) and penalties (2016/17) respectively. In the league, they claimed a clear 5-0 win in 2019/20 – Union's biggest defeat since their (recent) arrival in the German top flight – and won 2-0 last term. BVB have lost both matches in Köpenick (3-1 and 2-1).

Statistics: Borussia Dortmund have won 10 of their last 11 Bundesliga games in a run that started last season, and have scored at least one goal in each of their last 36 matches (ongoing club record). No team has found the net more times this season (13). Union are unbeaten in six games and last lost away to Wolfsburg (3-0) on 8 May. However, they have been held to draws in three of their four matches. Only two teams have conceded fewer goals than the men from Berlin (four), though the capital club have only kept one clean sheet in their past 14 Bundesliga games.
