Not only did BVB outscore Trier in their 3-0 victory in Rhineland-Palatinate; they were superior in every other aspect too. The statistics showed they had 22 shots to Trier's two, 78 percent possession, won 56 per cent of tackles and played 800 passes with a pass completion rate of 89 percent.

Shinja Kagawa scored twice in a competitive match for the first time since 25 March 2012 in Trier. Back then the Japan international was on target twice in a 6-1 Bundesliga victory over Koln, scoring BVB's second (47) and fifth (80) of the match. In total, Kagawa has seven goals in 18 DFB Cup appearances.

André Schürrle made his first competitive start in Black and Yellow in Trier, scoring a goal on his debut as he spectacularly rifled home an Aubameyang cross on the volley for BVB's third of the night (45). The 25-year-old's last goal in the DFB Cup came on 27 October 2015 as former club VfL Wolfsburg were beaten 3-1 by Bayern.

Half-time lead: The last time BVB were 3-0 up at the break in a DFB Cup game was in 2012/13, when Götze and Blaszczykowski were on target at home to Hannover 96 in the last 16. The final score was 5-1. The last 3-0 half-time lead on the road came on 9 September 2006 away to TSG Thannhausen (3-0).
