Given the 10-8 shots ratio (7-3 in the second half) in their favour, Leipzig's victory was not entirely undeserved despite BVB having 66% possession. Borussia really struggled to create chances against the men from Saxony, who defended solidly throughout. Here we bring you the match facts.

Strong comeback: 1,229 days after his last competitive appearance for Borussia Dortmund (against Real Madrid on 30 April 2013), Mario Götze made his comeback in Black and Yellow. Prior to his substitution he covered 8.7 km (the second-furthest of any BVB player) and won 63% of his tackles.

Always on the ball: Marc Bartra touched the ball 131 times; no Leipzig player touched the ball half as much, with Demme's 59 the highest figure.

Lack of shots: BVB only had eight shots on goal. They have only had fewer once under Thomas Tuchel, in a 1-0 victory in Leverkusen in February.

Off the woodwork: Schürrle's effort that hit the crossbar in the 83rd minute was Borussia Dortmund's first shot on goal after the break.

At their limits: As a team, Leipzig ran almost 6 km more than BVB. However, the newly-promoted outfit also committed almost twice as many fouls as the men from Dortmund (16:9).

Late goals: In Hoffenheim Leipzig equalised in the 90th minute to make it 2-2; today they scored the winner in the 89th minute.
