Borussia Dortmund have made a dream to start to their 2016/17 UEFA Youth League campaign by deservedly beating Legia Warsaw 2-0, although the three points came at a cost for coach Hannes Wolf's charges. Dario Scuderi badly twisted his knee making a defensive turn on the short grass in the 15th minute of the match and had to be transported to the Medical Centre in Warsaw.

The moments leading up to Dario Scuderi's (right) injury

Following Patrick Fritsch's fourth-minute lapse that Till Schumacher managed to deal with at the last minute, Borussia quickly took control of a match brimming with high intensity, hard running, wonderful link-up play and a lot of penalty-box action. Following excellent build-up play from Jakob Bruun Larsen, Jonas Arweiler gave BVB a deserved 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Everything appeared to be going according to plan – until Dario Scuderi picked up a serious injury.

BVB were left reeling – and the general uncertainty creeping into the Black and Yellows' play allowed the Polish champions to create a series of gilt-edged chances.

Eike Bansen parried the ball over following Holownia's shot from 20 metres, Szymanski struck the crossbar and Szczpanski missed an open goal in the 45th minute. In a rare attack for Dortmund, Scuderi's replacement Julian Schwermann struck the woodwork with an effort (45+3).

Kopacz's solo run results in own goal

However, in the second period BVB had their focus back and began to dominate. Driven on by young first-team player Felix Passlack and Dzenis Burnic, the team were creating chances by the minute, but Niklas Beste, Jakob Bruun Larsen and Felix Passlack all missed from good positions. It wasn't until David Kopacz came on for Patrick Fritsch that Borussia put the game beyond their opponents. An excellent solo run and pass across the face of goal by the midfielder ended with Malacowski steering the ball into his own net.

Legia never gave up in what was a highly-interesting and top-quality affair, with the hosts denied in the closing stages by wonderful reactions from Bansen. The U19s, who are equal on points with FC Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga West, will already be turning their attention to their next challenge. At 11:00 CET on Sunday 18 September, the German A Junior champions will take on FC Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen-Ueckendorf. Their first home game in the UEFA Youth League comes against Real Madrid in Holzwickede on Tuesday 27 September (16:00 CET).
