After seven minutes of extra time, the 2-1 win in Lisbon was perfect. Thomas Tuchel felt his team were well worth their three points: "Under no circumstances were my men going to let the victory slip out of their hands at the end of the match."

Thomas Tuchel (BVB): "Our back-four from the 70' minute on were sensational. We were incredibly young and inexperienced. Nonetheless, we played with such self-confidence in the first half, and we were very dominant, very strong and effective. After the break, we suffered for a quarter of an hour, we completely lost the plot. Then, during the subsequent phase of the game in which we took the sting out of it, we made two basic errors, and conceded the goal. That got the crowd going again in the stadium. However, under no circumstances were my men going to let the victory slip out of their hands. Throughout the second half, we were helped with a bit of luck. Our victory here, though, is not undeserved."

Jorge Jesus (Sporting): "We made a few changes after the break and positioned ourselves better. We improved defensively, created many good chances and simply played some good football. We were playing against a really strong team who knew what they needed to do after the score went to 1-2. It is not going to be easy to reach the round of 16. We still have a chance, though. There are still nine points to play for. We knew on seeing the draw that this group was never going to be easy. We must pick up points from our next two away fixtures, in Dortmund and in Warsaw." (fu)
