Coach Thomas Tuchel, goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke all spoke to sky directly after the match against Bayern Munich and, as expected, all three were rather happy men. "It was a top performance from us," said Tuchel.

Thomas Tuchel: "When you beat Bayern, you're making a statement. It was a very difficult match, we really struggled at times. But we knew beforehand that would be the case. When you get in the ring with Bayern, you can't expect to finish the fight without getting a black eye, without taking a hit. You need to hold your ground. That was our motto. No matter what happens, no matter how much we are struggling: never give up, keep giving support, always remain brave and continue to defend. And especially to defend the goal at the end. We did allow Bayern a few half-chances towards the end, but very few gilt-edged chances – perhaps none at all. So it was a top performance from us."

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: "My goal was a source of pure emotion for everyone here in the stadium, not only myself. Piszczu and Mario set it up superbly. It's absolutely fantastic that we won. My press-up after the goal was for a friend in the stands, I'd discussed it with him before the match. As for my big chance in the second period, I should have taken the ball on my right foot, that was my mistake. Fortunately we managed to win anyway."

Hans-Joachim Watzke: "We have beaten Bayern one or two times over the past few years, but not at home since 2012. It was an outstanding performance from both teams, incredibly exciting, and fortunately it ended positively for us. It has taken four years to finally beat Bayern in front of our own fans, it is a wonderful day for us all. For the team, the club, the fans. Our approach to the match was super on a tactical level. For all of us that was an extremely important victory. I have always said that we are capable of beating any opponent over 90 minutes, but I cannot say what this victory means for the rest of the season. We are taking each game as it comes and now we want to beat Warsaw and Frankfurt next week."

"We have to live with it"

Philipp Lahm (FC Bayern Munich): "Particularly in the first 45 minutes our final ball was lacking, otherwise we would have had a number of opportunities. It ended 1-0 to Dortmund, we have to live with that. The league is now exciting, which is what everyone always wants." (djg)
