Having already faced Sporting in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, BVB will now be making another trip to Lisbon with Benfica the opponents this time. Here are the initial reactions to the draw.

Hans-Joachim Watzke (Chairman of the Board): "We're delighted to be facing Benfica, but we know that there are no easy opponents in the knockout stages. This fixtures conjures up memories of the legendary duels against the Benfica side spearheaded by Eusebio in the '60s."

Michael Zorc (Sporting Director): "Benfica are by far the biggest club in Portugal. They won the league last year and are currently first again. They are a top team that uses their power to generate great dynamism. This is a very attractive draw."

Thomas Tuchel (Coach): "Having recently played Porto and Sporting, this draw against Benfica means we will have faced all of Portugal's big three in the space of two years. We're looking forward to two exciting and emotional games against Portugal's record champions and current league leaders.

Marcel Schmelzer (Captain): "Porto, Sporting, now Benfica – this draw completes the set of big Portuguese opponents. The draw conjures up memories of BVB legend Aki Schmidt, who unfortunately passed away recently, and Borussia's triumph over Benfica in that legendary match in 1963. Benfica are currently the league leaders in Portugal. It will be a difficult task for us."
