BVB's success from the spot continued as they followed up their 3-0 shootout victory over Union Berlin in the DFB Cup Second Round with a 3-2 penalties victory over Hertha BSC in the last 16. Each time there has been a Roman in goal... But this time it was Roman Bürki who displayed his killer instinct between the sticks.

Describe your feelings in the second half when BVB were clearly bossing the game but couldn't get that second goal?
Roman Bürki: To some extent there was a feeling of desperation. We were defensively solid and not giving away anything at the back. And at the other end we had one or two clear-cut chances. We performed well until the end, even with ten men on the pitch at times. Ultimately we got that little bit of luck to win the shootout.

How did you prepare yourself for the eventuality of penalties?
Bürki: Strangely enough, most of the takers that we had prepared to face had been substituted off by the end. As for Darida, I knew from our time together at Freiburg that he prefers to place his penalties to the goalkeeper's left. That's how I was able to make the save. There were two other penalties that I also got a touch to but I wasn't quite as lucky.

You actually saved the spot-kick from Allagui before the ball spun back over the line...
Bürki: That has never happened to me before. For his shot I went down into the corner at full stretch. In hindsight perhaps that's what I did wrong. Maybe I should have jumped more calmly to clear the ball. What I wanted to do was parry it to the side, but instead it struck the inside of my glove – and then started to spin backwards and over the line. Technically speaking, that was poor from me. It would have been even nicer if I had managed to save a second spot-kick too. But we reached the next round nevertheless.

How relieved are you to have reached the quarter-final?
Bürki: Very much so. The most important thing in the Cup is to make it through. And we did that. It was a home game under the floodlights, so all the players were very motivated. We played well, created chances and in the end deserved to win.
