Speaking at the post-match press conference, Thomas Thomas praised Ingolstadt for their "very good" performance, before adding: "But if you still manage to get the win and keep a clean sheet, this result is going feel brilliant the next day." Here we gather the statements made by the BVB coach.

Thomas Tuchel on the victory over Ingolstadt:
"Congratulations to Ingolstadt for their performance. I think that they played very well today. Getting a result like this feels brilliant at the end of such an intense week. It's clear that we didn't have our best game today. We were lacking the mental freshness, swiftness and passing accuracy that you need to be more dominant. We massively struggled to move the game into the opposition's half and lost the ball much too often. Then it's a running battle and your sense of security goes out the window. But if you still manage to win and keep a clean sheet, the result is going to feel brilliant the next day. That's why I became the coach here: because I have a team that can still win this sort of the match despite the huge strain they're under."

…the table situation:
"It's great that we've advanced. When you're in our situation and want to get points in the league, this kind of result is worth its weight in gold."

…the strain in the last few weeks:
"It's not always easy to shake it all off when you're playing a match every three days. Especially for all the young players, some of whom are hyped up. It's strenuous on a physical level but there's also a mental strain too. The matches need to be analysed, but then you're immediately back out on the pitch again. In Berlin, in Lotte, against Ingolstadt. When is there any time to analyse properly? And then on top of all that there is the draw and at 12 o'clock everyone is talking about the Champions League. Then you start thinking to yourself: Yeah fine, but we still have a Bundesliga match to play tonight. Sometimes the end result can be what you saw tonight."

…Marc Bartra, who did not make the starting XI:
"Marc was suffering from problems in his adductors up until this morning and they did not dissipate until he underwent an intensive treatment following the final training session. He felt he could try to warm up and really wanted to play. But he has just played seven matches in a row. He has never experienced this kind of intensity in the past few years. So I thought that it was too much of a risk that he might pick up an injury. Given our fixture list in April, it was not a risk we were prepared to take." (djg)
