Today was a special day for Julian Weigl, who started running again for the first time since suffering a serious injury in May. Speaking to the media, the midfielder described the occasion as a "milestone".

It was on Matchday 33, during an away match in Augsburg, that the 21-year-old suffered a broken ankle and was forced to undergo surgery. For Weigl, a "rising star" who has featured in 60 out of a possible 64 matches in his first two Bundesliga seasons, it was the first serious injury in his fledgling professional career.

"I was allowed to run today for the first time"

"I'm doing really well," he said on Friday in Bad Ragaz, continuing: "I was allowed to run today for the first time. That's a milestone for anyone who's had a long time out and undergone rehab. You work towards being able to run again because that's when you are able to make the most progress and develop musculature."

The rehab has gone according to plan so far. "There haven't been any setbacks. The leg has never swollen or become warm," reported the youngster, who hinted at a potential return to team training "following the international break on Matchday 2".

Part of the team again...

Part 2 of the rehab now begins in Bad Ragaz. Weigl is happy to be running and back among his team-mates again. "I'm happy to be here and to have the feeling that I'm part of the team. For me it's also important to be involved in the meetings and to be able to take in the coach's philosophy," he explained. (br)
