Gianluca Rocchi, who was born in Florence on 25 August 1973, made his refereeing bow as a 27-year-old in Serie C and has now become one of Italy's most highly-rated referees following a series of outstanding performances. He officiated at the 2012 Olympic Games and was also in charge of the 2017 Super Cup between Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Rocchi has previously overseen 69 matches at European level, including 35 in the UEFA Champions League. The 44-year-old's only previous match involving BVB came on 13 September 2011, when he oversaw Borussia Dortmund's 1-1 draw with Arsenal. (br)
