Tottenham Hotspur claimed six wins and one draw from seven matches against German opposition at White Hart Lane before Borussia Dortmund put an end to that run with a 2-1 away victory on 17 March 2016. The two clubs are set to square off again on Wednesday. This time, though, the match will be played at Wembley Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur facts

  • Tottenham have qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stages for the second year in a row and the third in total.
  • Spurs reached the quarter-finals in their debut campaign in the competition in 2010/11, but then exited following a 5-0 aggregate defeat at the hands of Real Madrid. Twelve months ago they finished third and qualified for the UEFA Europa League, where they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Gent in the last 32.
  • Tottenham only picked up three points from their home games in the 2016/17 group stages. They were beaten 2-1 by Monaco and 1-0 by Bayer Leverkusen before claiming a 3-1 victory over CSKA Moscow on Matchday 6. Their only home game since then was a 2-2 stalemate with Gent in the UEFA Europa League, meaning that Spurs have only won one of their last five home games at European level.
  • The London outfit have only won twice in their 12 outings at the new Wembley Stadium. The first was a League Cup final victory over Chelsea in 2008, while the second came against CSKA in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League group stages.

Borussia Dortmund facts

  • BVB are in the group stages for the 12th time in total and the sixth time in the last seven years. They have made it into the knockout stages in each of their last four UEFA Champions League campaigns.
  • Dortmund kicked off their campaign 12 months ago with a 6-0 victory over Legia Warsaw. It remains the club's highest victory away from home in European competition. However, they have failed to win on each of their last three away outings in Europe, drawing in Madrid and losing in Lisbon and Monaco.
  • Borussia Dortmund have four wins, one draw and six defeats from their previous matches in England.

General match facts

  • Borussia Dortmund came out on top when the two teams met in the last 16 of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League. BVB won both matches, recording a 5-1 aggregate victory. A goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a Marco Reus brace secured a 3-0 first leg win in Dortmund, with Aubameyang then scoring twice in a 2-1 win in London. Heung-Min Son scored the consolation goal for the hosts that night.
  • Two players have previously played for both clubs: midfielder Steffen Freund joined Tottenham from BVB in 1998, while defender Young-Pyo Lee moved in the other direction in 2008.
