BVB coach Peter Stöger spoke to sky following the victory at Mainz 05. "There were spells where you could see we're capable of playing some really good football," the new head coach said. Marcel Schmelzer and Julian Weigl also gave their take on the important win. "We need to carry this forward, build on it and continue like that in our last two matches," Schmelzer declared, with Weigl adding: "All in all, we're very satisfied. But this was only the first step in the right direction."

Peter Stöger: "We're all really delighted with this victory. All that matters is that we got something from the game. We struggled initially to get into the game, but in the first half we showed organisation. During the break we spoke about a few things that we wanted to correct. The second period was then significantly better, we were able to exert control and might have even put the match to bed earlier on. There were spells where you could see we're capable of playing some really good football. All in all, we're very satisfied. We were a bit tight on time before the match, I've only known the team for two or three days. My task is simply to make use of the players' qualities in the best way I can."

Marcel Schmelzer: "It was important to fight for these three points. It was a tough battle for every single player; that, coupled with our quality, earned us this victory. My criticism last time out was entirely appropriate. Every player knew it. I'm convinced that we would've also won on Saturday if we'd performed like we did against Mainz tonight. But first of all I'd like to congratulate the team. We've got the quality, we know that, but quality alone won't cut it. There are other qualities we need to demonstrate on the pitch; only by doing so will we win games. It goes without saying that it's also important for our team spirit to have kept a clean sheet. We need to carry this forward, build on it and continue like that in our last two matches."

"We remained patient"

Julian Weigl: "I had more of a free role in front of the defence than I have done recently; that suited me a bit. But all in all, the only important thing is that we won and, above all, that we got the victory with a clean sheet too. We remained patient and tried to make as few mistakes as possible. In the end we knew that they would get a bit more tired and that we'd get chances. All in all, we're very satisfied, but this was only the first step in the right direction." (djg)
